In the hustle and bustle of modern life, people still don’t forget to seek out a Hanoi with its old-world charm, a peaceful and profound beauty. And to add to its vibrant, somewhat nostalgic and endearing charm, the Phung Hung mural street was created. This project is a significant undertaking, aiming to promote tourism in the capital city to tourists.

The Birth of Phung Hung Mural Street
The “mural street” project officially commenced in November 2018. After more than 3 months of construction, the project was completed to overwhelmingly positive reception from everyone. 19 paintings on the railway bridge arches of Phung Hung Street were created from the brushstrokes of artists from Vietnam and Korea. Previously, the project had been put on hold. The reason is that some works by Vietnamese artists were rejected by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, which requested revisions or replacements.
A Hanoi of the Past on Phung Hung Street Mural
19 murals recreate the past life of old Hanoi. Here, visitors can admire the General Department Store, women carrying flower baskets, the clanging trams, Tet gifts… things that have faded into the past. The murals are painted with PU paint and Golden acrylics, with a durability of 5 to 10 years. Before painting, the painting materials are treated with a waterproof layer on the back.
The works successfully convey the message about Hanoi, the capital city. Hanoi, with its thousand years of cultural heritage, is facing great changes, yet it always preserves its traditions and cultural essence to leave a lasting impression on the hearts of Vietnamese people and international friends.
Phung Hung Mural Street – A Cultural Exchange Hub
With a street length of just over 200 meters, Phung Hung Mural Street is considered a cultural exchange hub, connecting with the Dong Xuan Market, Hang Ma Street, and Hang Luoc Street. It also hosts many recreational activities, folk games, and traditional arts.
Children and their families come here on weekends to play folk games. Elderly people come to admire the paintings, reminiscing about the past. Young people gather to take photos, capturing beautiful moments of their youth. There are also tables for tea and some traditional sweets such as: sticky rice cakes, peanut candy… for visitors to rest and take pictures.
The Phung Hung mural street has made a significant contribution to bringing traditional art into the modern urban space, helping to spread inspiration to everyone, especially young people, in creating and preserving the cultural heritage of the nation. Furthermore, it also makes Hanoi tourism in particular and Vietnam tourism in general more beautiful in the eyes of tourists.
